    Default Fraying thread

This is a picture of new gutermann thread after using thread conditioner. What on earth is going on? I use less than 18” in length of thread.
    TIA

I don’t have any brand new Gutermann thread, so can’t comment about if there was a change in it, but I have used it for years. Where did you purchase your thread? Did you contact them about it? What does the spool look like?
have you tried different needles…almost looks like the hole in your needle might not be the right size? I presume you are hand quilting if using the thread conditioner?

I have a newly purchased spool of Omni thread that I used for my last quilt that kept splintering. Thought perhaps it was the needle. Had just received 2 pkgs of needles from Amazon so I tried 5 needles before it stopped. Still don't know if it was the thread or the needles, but it made for a tearful 2 days of sewing.

What type of needles finally worked?

Suggestion ... unwind a bunch of the thread and see if the problem continues on? or disappears?

Could it be that as the plastic was being taken off the spool, that you scratched the thread somehow?
Or dropped it and scraped it against something?
Or scratched the needle across the spool? or some pins?

It doesn't take much to damage the thread ...

Most any thread I use does that if the needle stays in the same spot when hand sewing,

There might be a tiny burr in your needle eye. Is it a new needle? Did you try changing needles? I'm with @Onebyone I get the same damage if a needle stays in the same place in the thread.

I've been working on GFG EPP off & on since 2018, I only use gutterman or mettler. I use about 30" of thread at a time. I do all right if the needle keeps moving along the thread as I piece.

She will be queen size, I have 2 columns of flowers of 7 or 8 columns attached. Total 52 or something 3 ring flowers.

I was gifted an EPP project that the quilter wanted to try and didn't like. Her set up came with a Superior thread, so fine or bottom line. "best most invisible for hand piecing." Sounded great & I tried it. I found it very ravelly, and went back to my tried and trues. Not saying anyone else, just saying me.

when you say 18" does that mean you are hand sewing?
Otherwise I might think it is catching on a nick in the spool and to change how you have to spool loaded on your m achine, or a fine file to the spool edge.
