I make custom labels on my computer, usually including a photo relative to the occasion or receiver and print them on fabric. I frame them with fabric from the quilt and sew 2 sides in with the binding.

From what I have learned you add a label to all your quilts. The doll quilt I made, I put it on after I quilted. the wall hanging I just made for my sister I put it on before I quilted it. both turned out ok and I used white thread in the back, so the one I did before looked good and it was all done as I quilted. so I will do it again. I make my own labels because I don't have money to buy labels. that's all I know :D God bless. Penny

I always label and so far it has always been after the quilt is finished.

I use the June Taylor inkjet fabric sheets, make my design in a greeting card program and usually hand stitch them onto the back in a lower corner. However, for my last label I used Steam a Seam Lite and fused it on. We'll see if it holds up (at least I hope the owner will keep me informed). :-)

Here are some samples.

My name is in the lower right of the label...not shown

I think this was my 2nd quilt...got better at labeling and stitching ;)

I am going to try this technique. I just printed a bunch of business cards for some individual friends and I gave them as hostess gifts - about 10 each - tied with a pretty ribbon and I added a clip-art picture to some and some I 'googled' images of flowers and golfing figures, etc. They came out great. I think I could do the same thing on that ink jet, printable fabric and make 10 labels per page with pictures or whatever. Can't wait to try it.

I have been quilting charity quilts for Childrens Hospital in Seattle, and the gal that makes them, adds a fabric label that comes on a bolt from Joann's. She makes the label up with the name For the Love of..... Guild. Made by with her name and quilted by me.. she attaches a label to the backing on EVERY quilt before she sends them to me for batting and quilting. I return to her and she binds. She has taught me a valuable lesson about labels. YOU NEED ONE.....Joanie

I think the label idea or use of is a nice feature, but I have yet to sew one onto anything I have made. What I have done on the things I have given to family so far, is name it and make a separate label and include it in the package. One reason so far is that I have made table runners that can be used on either side, with a label on it would distract from the piece ( just my thoughts ) It just seems small things and big labels would take away from it. Now I do like the labels that you can incorportate into a quilt that blend in.. like if a rose, cut a rose from the fabric and make a label from it and sew it onto the quilt back or embroider on the backing before sewn together.

I add labels on the quilts I make for family members. (Birthdays/Xmas,etc) But I don't put them on the quilts I donate.
I machine embroider my quilt labels. Enclosed are a few of them.

I always use muslin hand embroider and have applied the label last; I think my next one I'll send out ( my first to send out) and attach the label to the backing before it's quilted, I like the idea of it being quilted in..
