I try to add a label of some kind to every quilt that I give away. When possible, I use the text feature on my sewing machine to make one and put a pretty graphic border around the outside and hand sew it in place on the lower right hand corner of the back.

For years, I didn't have a sewing machine with text as mine kept working but the machine was good so I used a marking pen to write/print the info on and then hand embroidered right on the quilt. For the grandchildren who will take their quilts to college, I put the info on the front of the quilt either in a block in the center or the righ hand corner. That way people will think twice before stealing as the ownership info is in plain sight and not easily removed. A hand sewn tag could be removed from the back and another added to cover the stitching area. I also photo the quilt in progress and completed and with the owner so that if the need to prove ownership, I have it. Luckily none of the quilts have been stolen - other things sure have but not the quilts.

One reason so far is that I have made table runners that can be used on either side, with a label on it would distract from the piece ( just my thoughts ) It just seems small things and big labels would take away from it. Now I do like the labels that you can incorportate into a quilt that blend in.. like if a rose, cut a rose from the fabric and make a label from it and sew it onto the quilt back or embroider on the backing before sewn together.
I agree with you and haven't labeled any of the small items either but then I've not made many small items yet. I tend to make baby, twin and queen sized quilts.

I am sending a photo of the last 2 labels I made. I made them in a microsoft publisher program. But you could make them in word as well and just insert the clip art. The second one on the page is an actual graphic of the block I used in her quilt that I pulled from my design in EQ6.
Thank you sharing your labels. They have given me some ideas for my own.

:-)

I machine embroider my quilt labels. Enclosed are a few of them.
Thank you for sharing your labels...I am hoping to learn to use the embroidery portion of my machine to make labels as nice as these.
