Default Diaper pattern and suggestions for 10 and 7 year old?

I have a 10 year granddaughter (approx 65 lbs) and 7 year old grandson (approx 32 lbs) who still wet the bed at night. The disposable diapers are costing a fortune so I thought I'd try making them a night-time diaper. Any ideas for patterns or suggestions for the best way to do this?? We are trying to encourage them and not shame them they are struggling with their parents divorce etc and there is stress in their lives. We only have the children three weekends a month and part of the summer. They are good children, just have this problem at night during their sleep. Sometimes my granddaughter is dry in the morning, but not always and I don't want t0 change the entire bed every day and wash the blankets and etc. Also she sleeps in a bunkbed so it's not so easy to change and make the bed. I guess I could pin a towel around them and make a couple pair of plastic panties and call it good, but if you have any ideas I'd appreciate them. And yes.... we do pray and ask God for help.

When my kids were young we used what they called training pants. They were like regular underwear but with extra padding. How about taking apart a pair of underwear to use as a pattern. They could be made from flannel with layers of terry cloth sandwiched in the front and back. This type of night time underwear might also be less embarrassing than diapers.

Why not invest in a couple of the "flannel type" mattress pads used for babies.. They are soft & waterproof.
My sis has used a couple of them for an elderly lady that she cares for with good luck.
They can be put under the sheet, or on top of the sheet and washed.
Also, they have larger ones in the Medical supply stores if I remember correctly.

Good luck with the emotional issues and congratulations on being so understanding!

I agree with Angellight...when my son was learning to stay dry, I bought that fabric at Joann's, although I don't know if they carry it now. It was flannel applied to vinyl, and it came in a 54" width. I bought a yard or so and cut in half, giving me two pads. That way, if he wet at night, I just pulled that vinyl and set the other one down. It cut down on the washing of blankets tremendously and made it quicker and easier to get him back to bed.

Try this: http://www.voguefabricsstore.com/Bab...-Sheeting.html

My family has gone though this, seems to be genetic. Most folks go through all the usual..diapers, timing of liquids, avoiding certain liquids, not drinking liquid after 5 PM, etc.
We believe that this is the wrong way to retrain them. It's due to a SMALL bladder, and, like the stomach, it CAN be enlarged. This will consist of letting and even encouraging the kids to drink all the water they can, then on to milk and chocolate milk and sodas..every minute of the day up to the time they go to bed. Of course they will wet the bed more for a while, but when the bladders enlarge, this problem will go away. Like gaining or losing weight, our bodies are capable of shrinking or enlarging from dieting or eating and drinking more foods and liquids.

I agree. My son used it too and it eliminates a lot of stress. It was as hard on him as it was me to go through this scene night after night. You might need to take them to a urologist to eleminate any medical issues.

My 10-year-old son had this problem and after a complete exam and x-rays, it turned out he was constipated. Chronic constipation will deaden sensitivity, so he couldn't feel when his bladder was full. Doc prescribed 3 months of OTC stool softener (Miralax mixed in hot chocolate) and he was good as new.

Good luck with your situation. So sorry about the chaos in your grandkids' lives, very sad.

You might want to check with a Chiropractor also. I talked to mine about my GS and they can make adjustments on their back to help this problem.

You might look for the flannel backed oil cloth tablecloths. They are frequently sold by the yard and look like picnic style patterns, ie. red and white checks. These would make the water proof pads for the bed. There are several disposable pads available like the puddle pads for puppies which could be used, the ones really made for beds like many hospitals use. Adult pull-up panties for adults with this problem cost about 50 cents a pair in our area, but even the size small would probably be too large. The pharmacist could help you locate the right size.
You might try a pajama pattern made with multiply layers of flannel and one layer of plastic. Cut the legs short and use elastic. If they fit too closely the kids may end up with diaper rash from the urine/heat, etc. Thank you so much for not shaming the kids.
