I learned many years ago that if you have fabric that is hard to match the thread, use gray.

I quilted a runner that had green leaves on the backing and I used the gray and it blended very well.

I use grey, lavender or beige on most all my quilts. It blends very nice. I never use black or white thread unless the quilt is black or white. Marge

excellent tip! i bought tons of white & tan and thought it would match but rarely does. I also have a heck of a time blending with the brights. Does anyone have a suggestion for that? I wonder if it looks different on the spool or if it's the lighting at the store....or another rookie mistake I just haven't figured out yet.

I had also read somewhere to use grey thread so I got a couple of the large spools from Joann's for 1.99 in different shades of grey. Great tip!

In my first quilting class, that is what my teacher told me - use gray. Of course, I don't always follow that, but for hard to colors it works great.
