IMHO I think squaring up those individual triangles with the bias, is the key. Thanks for a great tutorial!

Great tute, even 'I' could follow it. My test fabric was a little too busy so you really have to look for the star, but it is there. Thanks Tartan!

I took two 8 inch squares and made two half square trangles then cut them to 7 inches and continued with the rest of the tutorial, no bias edges. Had to do this twice to make four squares.
