I have some tapestry cushions (I didn't make them)...they have velvet backs with zippers. I find the zips quite good keeps the cushions inside better than an envelope back. Sorry I can't be of more help...but someone will be able to advise you.

I have posted a link to Pillow Patches and other possibilities on Amazon. You can find it other places though. I have made some of these and really like them. Instead of using zippers, you use buttons and I think it just adds a nice touch. Hope this helps and good luck.

I overlap my pillow covers 3" to 3 1/2". I have seen some that had about a 2" overlap, but they seemed to "gape" open just a little in the back.

You can also use velcro, either dots or strips, your choice. We make them alla time in fabrics to complement the upholstery job. They have a 3" overlap and one to three 1" dots of velcro, depending on the pillow size. We've also done them using zippers of course, for those pillows with rambunctious usage. For decorative use only, the overlap by itself would be enough

I usually use use 1/3 the length of the pillow for the overlap. Have no problem keeping them closed.

Try this video, it is an envelope pillow cover and I feel it is the best video on this subject I've seen.
