ladyred hawk - looks like stars in the night, good job. The yellow sashing give the feel of the moon surrounding the stars.

Sparky 08-23-2010 04:24 PM

Thanks so much. I did a different kind of 3-D pinwheel.

Thanks for Great tut. I think I have the perfect place for these on the lower border of a little girls quilt.
I noticed in one picture metal rods for take up.
What is your method to get the fabric onto these rods straight?
I am fairly new at this and I struggle with every quilt to get it rolled on straight.
I have set weights on the fabric to pull evenly while I roll.

In mounting the quilt, I first of course mount the backing. I have inch-marks on the leaders and pin from the center out to each side.
I can see that the backing is straight as I roll it along by watching that its edges ride at the same marks on the poles with each turning. You can put bits of masking tape on the poles at the edges of your backing if needed (much like a piece of tape on your sewing machine's footplate to get a consistent seam) so you can see that the edges are always in the same place. Watch all surfaces over, under, lower and upper each time you advance the quilt to avoid any puckering or creases or pulling of the fabrics.

Then float the batting and top on this backing, usually only need to eyeball but you can actually measure if needed to get a straight alignment of the top.

OOk - so I went straight to work on them and these are what I came up with -- 000 rats..Maybe Ihave to start a new topic to add the photos....??? Let's try that!!! I got it - took some figuring out but yes.... I made the backgroun a little larger than the pinwheel and it worked better for me...On the second picture all the pieces were the same size so when I put them together I was chopping off points see where the pins are?? so that's why I made the background a little bigger...I'm going at these like crazy.....and just love it....

tooMuchFabric 09-30-2010 10:58 PM

Waaay to go, that is so pretty. Now to see the completed quilt..... :P :P :P
