And here's the link for the pin cushion. The one in the tute is far prettier than mine! And the good thing is, if your DH has some CDs you can't stand, you can hide 'em in there - he'll NEVER find them!

Great tutorial; easy to understand and follow. Thank you so much for your time and effort.

sandpat 02-10-2010 06:14 AM

K, thanks for the link to the pin cushion, looks easy enough...now since you say there are more than 24 hrs. in a day over there......can you send some of those extra hours over here?????

k3n 02-10-2010 06:41 AM

sorry Patti, would love to but can't spare them!

SSTeacher 02-10-2010 06:43 AM

Thanks, K3n, for posting the tutorial on the pin cushion assembly. It is so beautiful; of course you can make the embellishments, as in the tutorial, especially to have something pretty, or just make a scrappy one so you can "cover" it with your pins. As for filler, I have a friend who suggested using "crushed emory." That way, it would keep your pins (and needles) nice and sharp. She suggested maybe Lowe's or someone would carry it. Anyone heard of where it is sold?

Thanks for the link; I happen to like almost all of my DH cd's but there are a few my kids left hanging around that I rather not hear . . . . hmmmmm . . .

Absolutely splenderous and tiggeriffic! Totally great! I've never understood quilt as you go. This tute is wonderful. Thank you for the time you took to stop and take pictures and put this tute together. It's wonderful. I can't wait to try one!

MonkeeGirl 02-10-2010 06:17 PM

That tutorial was wonderful! Sure wish the professionals could explain stuff half as good as you did. Please know you did a bang-up job and many of us greatly appreciate your time and effort. BTW...beautiful heart (the quilt and the quilter) Thank you

sarahelloyd 02-11-2010 05:03 PM

thanks so much for the tute, i have been trying to find out the best way of doing this for ages.

sew cornie 02-16-2010 09:56 AM

what an awesome tute! I have fabrics in waiting but have been intimidated by the idea of QAYG. Your pictures and descriptions are fabulous and make it look like a great project to do. Thanks so much!

sunflower126 02-17-2010 05:26 AM

That was great. You made it look so easy. I'll have to put this project on my to-do list for this year. Wish me luck. Will post pics if I ever get it done.

I made a reversible quilt queen size for my son this past Christmas, using black and whites on one side with blue and whites on the other side. I used the same method, but I used whole pieces instead of strips, for my blocks. Several ladies in my quilting group use the reversible method for making quilts, they use strips and triangles for theirs, we all use sashings on both sides. We use two pieces of sashing and sew them together on each side with one side wider and folded to fold over the two blocks, I machine quilt and machine sew my blocks and sashing, I hate to sew by hand. They sew their blocks together by machine, but hand sew one of the sashing pieces. I will check with the lady who taught us the method for the address and name of the book, that she has if you are interested. I am not on this site every day but will check it in case you want the information about the book.

sunflower126 02-19-2010 04:38 AM

If you could find out the name of the book that would be most helpful. I'm confused when reading your description-not that you wrote a bad description, I'm just not that familiar with QAYG technique. I made placemats with the technique many years ago. Of course they didn't require sashing strips. Just a binding around the edges. I avoid hand sewing unless absolutely necessary. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

You are so sweet to go to all this trouble for all of us. I had seen lap-quilting tutorials in the past but it seemed like it would be so hard to join the blocks when they were finished. You made it simple with the black strips and that made it look like stained glass. Thank you so much!

k3n 02-22-2010 09:48 AM

You're all so welcome! It's no trouble at all, I've had so much help and inspiration from this board it's nice to have the chance to give a little back.

ReRe 02-22-2010 06:50 PM

I've only done this on 2 little blocks that I did just for the purpose of testing it out and it is PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only problems I had were Operator Headspace problems <BWG>. I can't wait to use it on a complete blanket. Maybe I'll just have to invent one to use it on.

Thanks ReRe, I'm glad it worked out for you. :-D

this is going on my to do list

Newby0709 02-24-2010 07:10 PM

K3n, thank you for this tutorial. I tried it and loved the simplicity of the procedure and the outcome. I used glue instead of the way you recommended, just because I had never tried glue. I like that also. Today I went to Joann's and got the tiny tip for the glue bottle as has been recommended in other threads. For the backing piece, cut 1 1/2 inches, finished to 3/4 inch, I used a bias tape maker and it was so simple. I am excited to finish the project I am currently on and do a quilt in this method. Thanks for your detailed, simple instructions.

Excellent! I was hoping someone would try it with glue! I'm so pleased it worked. And a bias tape maker in that size makes it so much simpler too - I only have a 1/4" one for stained glass appliqué - might have to invest in a bigger one! :-D

This is the best pictorial tutorial I have ever seen. I bought a book several years ago in order to do this....your pictures are so much clearer. Wish I had know about this sooner.....LOL! You have done a lot of us a great service....Thank You!!!

I have a drawer full of string blocks that I have made over the years. I just need to put them together. I printed a picture of the stitches you used to add "flavor" to each block.....guess that's my next "to do" project. Between you and K, I think I am finally getting inspired to get some of these together....... :D

Gal 03-18-2010 11:07 AM

Wow, I have just read through this complete thread, What a fantastic tutorial, I have always wondered about how strong this method might be, I have no problems on that score now!
Fantastic instructions and pics, I am definately going to use this method and make the pin cushion as well! As i am new to quilting I am looking at ways in which to go with simple but effective designs, this is just perfect! Thankyou for taking the time and trouble t0 explain all this, I am definately sold on it because I use lots of scraps and off cuts to make my quilts.

Many thanks from a happy scrap quilter!!

Gal

Great tute!!

wichypoo 04-13-2010 04:02 PM

My first quilt was a QAYG and I sure wish I had seen your tutorial , it would have saved me alot of tear. Thanks for
giving you time to do this for us.
 Karen

Happy Tails 04-14-2010 04:13 AM

31. Then bind the quilt in the usual way ! I used the same black as the sashing to create a stained glass window effect.

That's it! Hope it was OK and that if you give it a try, you'll show your pics.

OMG I believe you are my saviour!!!!!!! I am going back to my baby quilt that I tried to "fun and done" (the mess at all the seams) and cut them off and try this method. I will let you know how I made out and post pictures. OMG I am so excited, I'll probably never meet any of you people, but you will never know how happy I am to belong to this site. Since nobody I know here quilts, sometimes it's so lonely with my love of quilting, LOL that's a whole other story. Thank you so much!!! Wendy

k3n 04-14-2010 04:20 AM

Wendy you are so welcome! I hope it works out for you and look forward to seeing your pics!

Thanks everyone for the appreciative remarks.

Kitsie 04-26-2010 09:24 PM

Even though you've used your method doing a string quilt I'm glad you also showed the crazy quilt. What a great way that would be to do a sampler as you are learning different blocks! You could just keep the ones you really like (or did well enough to satisfy you!)

Very good tute - I join the other q's in congratulating you. Thank you!

k3n 04-26-2010 11:03 PM

Thanks Kitsie - when I get a chance, between other projects (!), I want to have a play with different blocks using this method - and making them into a sampler is a great idea!
