Oh my goodness this is such a pretty quilt! I can't wait to make one! I have a jelly roll and other colors that I got for my daughters quilt. The only problem was I kept changing the pattern because I never was satisfied. Now I know what pattern to use and how to make this quilt. Thanks so much!

Deb watkins 10-04-2016 05:53 AM

WOW.....a scrappy pattern that doesn't make my eyes go haywire! I have been cutting my scrap pieces into squares, this is going to be a great pattern to use them! Thank you so much for this tutorial!

You know while making my rwb blocks I noticed another way to construct the blocks...think of the block as a 4patch with a log on 2 sides. Make 3 4patch units with the lower right 4 patch made up of a scrap square and a log square paired with the 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 log...then add the log pieces to the right side and across the bottom. For me it makes it easier to make a bunch of 4P units, then at a later date make the lower right 4P and add the logs... I've started another set of blocks as a leader and ender project for this quilt layout...Thanks again for sharing your design.

That is exactly how I thought to do it. I always look to see how I can construct a design in sections rather than rows. Kudos to the designer as well.

Wow I really like this quilt. Hard to believe they are log cabin blocks. Good job, thank you for the tutorial.

I'm back in the land of being able to use wifi internet again. 2 weeks with spartic usage is boring. I missed chatting. I'm glad both bd ladies received their candy.
I'm also like the 2 1/2' log cabin quilt. I'm currently working on that one. I making it king size, total of 72 blocks, if I calculated it right.
I'm practicing with sending a pic on this site, so I'm just sending a practice pic.

This will be lovely...

This is a beautiful quilt, and a great tutorial, thank-you so much for sharing your tutorial, I have so many 2" squares so I'm going to try making it with them, I was needing a new idea since I have made 4 or 5 quilts using 2" squares and I still have so many of them, I think those little squares are multiplying when I'm asleep.

tuckyquilter 11-24-2016 05:14 PM

This is a great tutorial. I can see a complete novice using this to make a beautiful quilt. Pictures are worth a 1000 words.

zozee 11-27-2016 01:02 PM

Correct my thinking if I'm wrong, but I can picture this block being made by first making a 9 patch, then adding the other pieces?

If there's no reason why it wouldn't work, I may just go ahead and start making 9 patches when I'm in the mood or as "leaders and enders" until I'm ready to add the whites with the remaining colored squares , closer to finishing time?

JENNR8R 11-27-2016 04:37 PM

That would work just fine. You can put it together any way that makes sense to you.

Actually, I make mine by arranging my pieces on top of the graph-paper pattern. I sew them together as a leaders and enders project. When that block is all sewed together, I arrange more scraps on the graph-paper pattern. When I have enough blocks, I make it into a quilt.

The only reason I did the tutorial this way is because people had a hard time picturing the scrappy logs.

I'm so glad you wrote the tutorial in the "traditional way" of making logs . It totally helped me picture doing it that way. Once I "got it" I saw it that way, I could see it built other ways. I'm eager to start it!

mtkoldra 12-28-2016 10:42 AM

your quilt and your directions have inspired me to start quilting again and use up my scraps,
thank you for sharing

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this tutorial. I have always loved the log cabin pattern and I have loads of scrap fabric. I love your quilt. What is the finished size of your quilt? I tried to count the blocks but I had trouble because they blend so nicely.

You're welcome! :)

Each of my blocks is 10" finished. There are six blocks across and nine blocks down. With the added binding the quilt is approximately 61" x 91." You could change the number of blocks to get different dimensions. I wanted mine extra long because I like to wrap the bottom of the quilt under the mattress.

What an honor to win a ribbon at a state fair. Congratulations not only on your beautiful blocks but on the overall workmanship.

I love this pattern!! I used all scraps(including small ones) and am very pleased with the finished quilt top. Since I used natural Kona Cotton for the light side, I want to hand quilt feathers in the light. I have 2 templates, but they don't fit the space and look like I want. I would love to have feathers that curve around the colored squares to fit the space. I have tried to draw free handed feathers(4 times) without success. HElP! Any ideas? I've looked on YouTube and I can't duplicate what I see. Quilt Shops in the area don't offer free handed feathers or templates. I would love to be able to draw the kind I see on YouTube that curves to fit any size space. Thanks

I'm not good at getting consistent free-motion feathers either. How I get around that is to draw an outline area on a piece of paper the same size as the white portion... of maybe two blocks since it repeats throughout the quilt. I then start drawing my feathers on the paper with a pencil. I erase lines that I don't like until I have a drawing that looks good in the space. I then outline those feathers on the paper with a sharpie so that they show up well. Tape that drawing on a lightbox, put the quilt top over the drawing and trace with a blue Mark-Be-Gone water-soluable marker. When one area is traced, move the quilt top to the next area lining up the pattern with the previously marked lines. Don't iron the quilt after putting on the blue marker. Submerge in cold water to get rid of the marks when the quilt is finished.

I used this method to mark a quilt that won a Judge's Choice ribbon in a national show:

I’m including a picture of the placement on a portion of my quilt to help you identify the block in my quilt.

The last picture is the finished quilt.

I hope this explanation gets your creative juices flowing. I love it when I have inspired others to make their own creations.

Love Love Love this quilt! I am definitely going to try this one. Any chance you can tell me how many yards of white material you used?:)

Unfortunately, I have no idea how much white fabric I used... and it would really depend on what size quilt you decided to make. I just picked something from my stash that I had a pile of. If I had had enough light 2.5" scraps, I would have used them the same way as the colored 2.5" scraps. I think that would have looked even better.

Please post a picture of your quilt when it is finished. I love seeing the new and improved versions that others make. :)

Silly Scrapper 01-26-2017 11:48 AM

Yes that would be excellent too. I like the white, though. I have quite a lot of white with small roses I think will do just fine. Thanks for getting back to me so quick. I'm just figuring out Pinterest so it took me a while to find it again. LOL

I'm a few months later in seeing this but want to thank you for your clear tutorial. I, too, love Log Cabin quilts and this is a wonderful lay out. Your quilt is beautiful and I thank you for preparing and sharing. Love this QB!!! I have saved 2-5" squares of every item I had sewn (garments) for our daughter (since 1968); long before we knew about 'charm squares', and think this layout will be perfect for cutting those squares into 2 1/2" squares. I have a tone-on-tone white teddy bear print for the background cuz she's a bear lover. Since she will turn 50 next year, now is a good time to get it done.

Try copy and pasting to WORD (in Office). Highlight from top to bottom what you want to print. then right click on your mouse to COPY, then go to WORD to PASTE it.

Thank you for all the pictures showing your wonderful tutorial. I made one block using 2 inch squares and strips. When I finish I will post a picture. Again thank you for sharing.

I love JennR8R 2.5 squares log cabin quilt....Look for instruction to both right and left side....I will figure out how to reverse pattern, but not a word about it, that I have read here... so nice for her to share this idea....

Barb2018 01-28-2018 04:54 AM

Thanks for the awesome directions. I've been wanting a pattern to make with 2.5" pieces. I'm wanting to make something scrappy using one piece of everything from my stash and have a bolt of white fabric. Hugs to you!

cindyb 07-17-2018 04:54 AM

So glad someone posted the new thread which lead me back to here!!!!! I had not seen this before - gosh, what we can do with log cabins - and this takes it to the next level!!!!
