Turning 2.5” Scraps into a Log Cabin Block

10 Attachment(s)
I’ve had numerous requests to explain how I made the log cabin blocks in my http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...y-t275731.html quilt.

My version of this block is made with 2.5” scrap squares and white strips. The finished block is 10.5” unfinished.

1. A graph paper pattern to use for placement
2. Sew a 2.5” scrap square and 2.5” white square together
3. Sew a 2.5” x 4.5” white strip “log” to #2
4. Sew a 2.5” x 4.5” log strip composed of two 2.5” scrap blocks to #3
5. Sew a 2.5” x 6.5” log strip composed of three 2.5” scrap blocks to #4
6. Sew a 2.5” x 6.5” log strip composed of three 2.5” scrap blocks to #5
7. Sew a 2.5” x 8.5” log strip composed of four 2.5” scrap blocks to #6
8. Sew a 2.5” x 8.5” white log strip to #7
9. Sew a 2.5” x 10.5” white log strip to #8
10. Finished block

You can use these blocks in any log cabin setting. I chose the Barn Raising setting.
I’m including a picture of the placement on a portion of my quilt to help you identify the block in my quilt.

The last picture is the finished quilt.

I hope this explanation gets your creative juices flowing. I love it when I have inspired others to make their own creations.

Thank you. I was given a lot of 2.5 in. squares. This will be a perfect way to use them.

Thank you so much!!! I will certainly use this pattern. I've been saving a long time and I love to use up my "left-overs". I plan on sharing it with others in my sewing group. We all have leftovers.

Oh joy, I bet everyone is busy cutting up their scraps! Great, clear tutorial!

ManiacQuilter2 02-16-2016 02:10 PM

I like your Barn Raising setting. Very nicely done. Did you have an easy method so that the squares seams nested nicely??

kele 02-16-2016 02:12 PM

This is great! Thanks so much for sharing.

I just stick a pin in each intersection, and they mostly line up. If there is any fullness between blocks, I put that side down to let the feeddogs adjust it for me. I always press the seams open.

A trick that I have just started using is, after pressing a seam, I put a square ruler on top of the block until it cools. That makes all of the pieces really flat and accurate.

Fun quilt! I may do this pattern with the 1250 -1500 candies coming from the birthday swap! I love your floral quilting in the white space.

You'd get 96 blocks from 1,250 candies.

This is a great alternative to a scrappy 9 patch Irish chain! I have lots and lots of scraps. Easy pattern to follow. Thanks!

Thanks for tute, I love your quilt and my aim this year is to use up some of my scraps.

jmoore 02-17-2016 03:37 AM

you are so thoughtful to post this... I'm sure it took some time to prepare such a wonderful tutorial and much appreciated. I can imagine you did get a lot of requests, I loved your quilt when you posted it last week or so too.
Thank you for sharing.

GramE 02-17-2016 04:29 AM

Ok, I'm a newbie. How do I save this somewhere for future reference? Thanks

quilterpurpledog 02-17-2016 05:46 AM

I appreciate your sharing your pattern and method. I would not have recognized your quilt as a Log Cabin just by looking at it. It is gorgeous. I plan to copy your tutorial and use it soon.

LindaJ 02-17-2016 05:51 AM

How nice of you to take the time to show how you did your quilt. Going to start cutting my squares. Thanks

Karamarie 02-17-2016 05:52 AM

You made the instructions so easy to follow with all the pictures. My favorite pattern is the log cabin. Thank you.

Karen G 02-17-2016 06:19 AM

Go to thread tools on the upper right side of the thread and select follow this thread. Love your block!

Geri B 02-17-2016 06:53 AM

Thanks so much for the excellent tute/pics....... About how much yardage for the background?

Wanabee Quiltin 02-17-2016 06:54 AM

Thank you for this, I am always looking for ways to use up my 2.5 inch squares.

I have no idea... I used leftover white fabric on mine. The amount of background fabric you would need would depend on the size and setting of whatever you choose to make.

collector49 02-17-2016 07:42 AM

Thank you so much for your detailed instructions. I can't wait to get started.

tapper 02-17-2016 08:21 AM

Thank you.
I wanted to make this a bit bigger but having a 10" finished block. If I use 7 blocks across and 8 blocks down can I still do a barn-raising pattern? Would appreciate your thoughts.

Irene C. 02-17-2016 08:27 AM

Great tutorial! Thank you for the inspiration for all those scrap squares.

gram2five 02-17-2016 10:04 AM

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this tutorial. Very clear instructions and your quilt turned out beautifully.

Here is a layout that is six across and eight down in the barn raising setting. If you added one more block to the width, the layout would be off center. Any time an odd number of blocks is used, the design will be off center.

I'd make the center "off-center" intentionally to add interest to the setting. My quilt had nine blocks down, and it was off center. I wanted extra length so the quilt would tuck under my mattress.

Thank you for replying.
I thought yours was 6x9 blocks and I like the 'off-center' layout, so yours works out to approx. 60"x 90".
I wanted a bit wider and less length, so I thought a 7X8 layout. Guess I could add a border but I don't want to do that.
Decisions, decisions.

Your tutorial is great: clear directions, great diagram, and wonderful samples showing each step! And the additional hints you gave throughout the thread are very informative.

Thank you for sharing with us!

klgreene 02-17-2016 02:18 PM

I loved the quilt when I saw it yesterday, now I love it even more because I love scrappy, and have a lot of 2 1/2 squares that I need to use, and this is absolutely perfect. I love it.

KenZ 02-17-2016 03:45 PM

Thanks for this tutorial, you gave me a lot of ideas.

onaemtnest 02-17-2016 04:09 PM

Thank-you for this tutorial. The pictures along with detailed instructions are wonderful. I absolutely cannot get your quilt example out of my mind thinking about all the scrappy 2.5 candies I have ready to go!

As someone else has already stated it is obvious that you spent a great deal and thought in sharing this with the board and for that I again say, thanks so much!

greaterexp 02-17-2016 06:46 PM

I just love your quilt and appreciate you taking the time to create such a clear tutorial. Thank you!

What a great tutorial!! I had grafted this our last evening, would have waited had I known you were going to do this. Your pictured tutorial makes it so much easier, thank you so very much!!!
