I find using an Add-a-Quarter Ruler very helpful with paper piecing. After 1st sewing with right side of fabric facing you, fold paper back and cut the 1/4 inch using the ruler. Put second fabric on right sides together matching fabric with 1st fabric cut. Sew on line. Fold paper back and cut 1/4 seam with ruler. Sew third piece on matching fabric with that cut.

The straight of grain is mostly important on the outside edges. If you have to choose which edges are on the straight (non stretchy) grain, always choose the outside edges of the block.

OK I have tried and tried to download the birdhouse pattern I can't get it. I tried other of her patterns too and they wouldn't download either. I have a very slow dialup and figure that was the problem so I am going to try to find another pattern. Maybe to fit in the house idea so I can make a town quilt for a friend of mine who intends to retire and travel in their camper. they can carry their own town with them. If anyone knows of any other patterns that I can look at please let me know.

Oh this should help me too. I never thought to cut the template apart and use as pattern pieces to get the direction of the fabric going the right way. I just did hit and miss till I got it right...sometimes I used my light box. This should be so much easier!!!

To save fabric when paper piecing try this.

Make several copies of the paper pieced project.

Carefully cut along the lines to make templates

Use the template to cut out shapes about 1/2 inch larger in all dimensions than the template.

Also use the template to place pieces on the grain of fabric.

After the piece is cut and placed in the section to sew. Trim only the side you will sew to 1/4".

Choose the next template and cut as above.

Match edge to be sewn right sides together to the piece already pinned to paper. Sew.

This method cuts down on waste and helps avoid stretching because pieces are cut on the straight grain. This is especially important in large pieces that will be quilted to prevent distortion.[/quote]
