On Friday she cleans the place where the cows are, removing the "MUD" and "cow pies".
This helps the cows not be dirty and be with good health... is it??

Often times, the dairy cows are scored by the butterfat and volume of milk produced each week. Dairy goat are scored also. Unknown if the milk sheep are scored thus, but maybe. Leading producers by the record can earn more money on the sale of their stock.

Yes we have our cows "tested" every month. A DHIA supervisor comes and takes samples of each cows milk. Because we have a pipeline, milk weights are determined by a calibrated meter that attaches to the individual cow's milk hose before it goes into the pipeline. The milk sample is sent to a lab for not only butterfat, but protein %'s as well. We also have a SCC test done. Somatic Cell Count is a measure of white blood cells, the higher the SCC the greater the incidence of mastitis. Our milk is purchased by the levels of all three (BF,P, and SCC) High levels of SCC decrease the amount of cheese yielded from 100# of milk. High % levels of protein increase the # of cheese per 100 # of milk.

But no, this is not the scoring I mean.

Oksewglad...do you still live on a working dairy? Your description brought back memories of when I helped milk cows for the neighbor. He had a double 8 parlor. He took the front 4 and I did the back four unless there was a new heifer in my section. He did all the training.

And about Cows and Milk .... Much the same here in Canada. The "testing" monthly is done in the same idea. Each recorded per cow, so that each cow can be recognized for their production of milk, butterfat and protein. Also the SCC. This monthly test is not used for payment to the dairy farmer, but for the individual cow's records, which can definitely affect the value of that animal to the herd and/or if selling to another producer. If not such good news, it could also be the reason that cow may need to leave the herd! She's got to be "worth" staying ... the producer needs to make $$ from her! And there's always new heifers coming on that are wanting her spot!!

Payment for the milk is based on the butterfat and protein in the milk. That is a different test which is done via samples taken by the milk truck driver when he picks up the milk every 2nd day. These samples are used to calculate the payment. Also, to ensure the consumer gets a quality product ... antibiotics, added water, bacteria, or other inhibitors are tested for. If any of that should show ... serious and very stiff penalties to the producer! (If antibiotics are found s/he doesn't get paid for the milk, plus s/he pays for all of the milk on the milk truck that it contaminated!) .... These tests are done at the processing facility before the milk is unloaded (for obvious reasons).

So that might be considered ... DS101A!

QuiltE...I used to sell livestock feed and those test sheets were terrific tools to evaluate the feed as well. Some farmers used them well and some didn't hardly open the report. It was fun and challenging to work with the good dairy producers.
