Wow! I was on my way home from taking the kids to school this morning and there at the entry to my own neighborhood was a yard sale sign that said there was fabric! Well, it turned out the lady having the sale was friends with a doll maker here in the area who died a couple of years ago. She took a bunch of fabric and stuff off the family's hands and had decided to not hold onto it any longer. There was a box of treasures for $5 which I snatched without even really looking through it because it was borders or parts of costumes pieced with tiny angles and decorative stitches and such. I will have to post pics of some of this woman's tiny piecing. Then I got 13 yards of batiks, Jenny Beyer and other nice fabrics for $7 and eight feedsacks for $1 each! And I got first pick! After I got my haul home, I decided to go through it a little. That made me regret having put one of the fabrics back because it was used in some cool pieced borders. When I went back, not only was that cut gone, but so was the whole box of feedsacks I hadn't gotten! Whew! That was close! The only problem is they smell like old smoke. So I will need to remedy that at some point. Several of the feedsacks still have the string at the top in places!

put the fabs into the washing machine. obviously, for the vintage fabs you will want to use a gentle cycle and a gentle detergent. when the water has filled up, and the machine starts agitating, add 1/4 cup ammonia.

i will never understand how something that smells so foul can remove odors, but it works.

Lucky you. I was lucky enough to get two flour sacks from my FIL when they cleaned out his mother's house. They also have the string still on them. Not sure what I will do with them. Enjoy!
