Both my children had them. Made their mouth sore during the time that you expand them with the key but I made sure and gave them soft foods and their favorites. Even took spaghetti to school for my son. His had to be turned 3 times a day. They both had to have jaw teeth removed in addition to this but they both have beautiful smiles today which they are very proud of.

my daughter had an upper when she was 4 years old, it took only 6 months to expand her palate and 6 months with a retainer to make sure it would stay that way, she has had no problem ever since and never needed braces.

So good to hear about the uppers - but no one experienced lower expanders?

My daughter had an upper expander to widen the roof of her mouth. They wanted to do surgery and cut the palate, bring it down to widen it. We tried the expander (we called it a crib there was another name I can't remember)it was also used to stop her tongue thrust and thumb sucking. It worked tremendously, she is 30 and has the most beautiful teeth. I am so glad we didn't do the surgery.

My daughter also needed a dental expander. It worked really well - her teeth and mouth look great!

My daughter had them when she was young, and it worked beautifully. Hers was not the screw type, but the one that was more like a paper clip shaped like a "W". I don't remember her complaining about any pain. It was very gentle, and she only wore it a few months.

Amazing that there are so many here that know of these - I've never heard of them before this! I wish my dentist would've tried it. Hopefully ours will go as smoothly! I guess I need to ask the dentist about how the lowers work - even from googling I just can't find that much info on it. But the uppers seem to be very successful! You are really making me feel better about this! :)

My 9 year old step daughter has had the lower and upper removable for about a month. Somehow, the lower one flew out of her mouth when she was running in the yard. Apparently they weren't tight enough and she was playing with it with her tongue. I searched on my hands and knees for 3 days in the rain and even borrowed a metal detector trying to find it.....no such luck. $350 for a new bottom. Please make sure the patient is responsible enough for this pricey piece of equipment.....They need to be removed for snacks and gum...my step daughter is obsessed (addicted?) to both of these....and she really has no concept of things being expensive.

I have never heard of this. My DD had to have 12 teeth pulled, and braces for a couple years, but she has a great smile now. Poor kid got my "Osmond" teeth, and her dad's narrow jaw.
