Default scabbard for grandson new sword

My grandsosn got a plasticmsword for Christmas. Blade extends out and it has batteries and is quite noisy. I offered to make a scabbard, but have no idea what I am doing. I traced it and made notes on the carboard, like the thickness and how wide to makeit so I wouldn't forget to include it when I transferred the carboard pattern to fabric. I also snapped a picturemof it too. Anyone have any suggestions or hints? I am totally out of my comfort zone. I amde a dog vest for outr lab once. She is yellow and stood out like a sore thumb, so I made her a vest with camoflauge fabric. But other than that, it has mostly been quilts. Maybe I am worrying too much, but we don't live in the same town and I would like tomget it done right the first time.

I can only tell you of scabbards we use at work. Extend the back that will be against his body. This is where the handle rests above the pocket for the blade. And a belt loop can be attached there unless you need it to be an over body strap
He will use and appreciate whatever you come up with

Make sure you have the pattern wide enough to consider the thickness of the blade. Serious scabbards have spacing materials between the top and the bottom.

Cut out two pieces of felt using the drawn pattern. Stitch around the outline leaving opening. Add a loop to attach to belt.

    One here.

I'll be anxious to see what you come up with. Sounds like an interesting project.

I would make it from durable fabric because he will use it lots and wildly. Whipping your sword out and slamming it back in produces wear. He will have so much fun with it.

I went to a ren faire in full garb. Security pulled me aside to discuss my sword. ( Live steel had been outlawed since 9-11 ( stupid)) They told me of that change. I smiled and nodded and slowly pulled a cheap plastic sword out of my serious scabbard. Everyone had a good laugh.

My thought would be some faux leather. Even Walmart carries it for not much.
