thanks for all the memories that this strand brought about, i have experienced a lot of them. most fun i had though, was trying to explain rotary dial telephones and records to 2nd graders. they actually knew tapes, including 8track, but not the records, or the record player....

yeah 19 years old..... I was that age once! "I remember when I use to walk 5 miles to school in the rain"a (my father's daily saying) and I would say, "Why didn't you ride the bus?"

I have a 1995 Nissan pickup with a 5 speed stick shift. I like the stick a lot better than an automatic. They do still make them.

We also have a Toyota Carolla that is five speed. What a concept --- the driver deciding what gear to be in.

Oh I remember my grandmas number, the ring, the operator (Thelma)and the other 5 families that were on her line. I also remember, my grandpa worked for the highway dept, and he always got called out for emergency runs..and if someone was on the party line..they got disconnected, so his call from the highway commisioner would come through. The other people were never warned..just poof..the call was done.

Oh, yes....my mother would get up really, really early and go down in the cold cellar where the wringer washer was and the wash water she used was scalding hot and when she rang the soapy clothes through the wringer steam would rise. And then she hung them on the clothesline, everything in order, all the socks matched, the shirts, pants, etc. And she never complained....never complained...no matter what life through at her she had the most beautiful smile that warmed you from the inside out.

lol I still drive a stick which is a vanishing item in its self !LOL I learned on a column, then went to the floor stick or whatever it is called. But to trade it in, look out no one wants a stick and its a 6 speed !LOL
I found out that anymore its a "special order" to have a 4,5 or 6 speed!! My next Nissan will be an automatic I guess !LOL

I also learned to drive in a three on the tree pick up...That was in 1974, and I've driven a standard (column or floor) ever since. Drives the hubby crazy, because of course the re-sell value isn't as good.

I remember (and can actually still use) a mimeograph, remember fighting with carbon paper in typing class, and while we don't have a rotary phone any more, I do have an 8-track player that still works (and we've got a couple disco cassettes that play in it...)
