Hello everyone. I'm Judy. This is a first for me. I've read a lot of the posts and have found many of them quite interesting and they have answers to many of my questions. I have been quilting for 2-3 years now and love it. I have a question -- I just purchased my first home and am excited about setting up my sewing room. This is a short-sale and have no idea how long it will take for me to move in. In the meantime I have been packing up my stash. I have a lot of big and small projects that I haven't started yet -- I quess I'm saving them for my "retirement". My question is how do I store these projects? What I've been doing is keeping everything including pattern in plastic bags in a box marked "quilt projects". Is this the right thing to do or is there a better way? Any suggestions on how I should be storing them? Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

That method sounds fine. And how great that you'll be able to spread out into a designated room in the new house.

I use the 2 gallon Hefty bags, and sometime the huge blue Hefty bags, to make sure that everything needed for the each project is in one place.

'Cause it might be years until you actually get to sewing that particular quilt top. And it is NOT fun to go searching for that one half yard of special fabric you were planning on using. Not fun at all.

Hi......how about this, get skirt hanggers, hang the mtl. on the hanger along with the pattern (copy the pattern and put in a baggie and keep with it, then u still have the orig. if u want to use it before). You can get clear bags to hang over it or use any bag and hand a tag on the hanger saying what it is. I got this idea from a quilt show and saw them hanging panels on skirt hangers and said gee, I can use that for my unfinished projects. U will have a closet in the new room right, so will b perfect and out of the way. What u think???? I probably should post this huh. It is a great idea for me for sure!!!!

First, welcome to the board! Do you live in a humid area? I ask because I just recently moved back to California (dry desert-like climate) from Vanuatu (island in the south pacific-very tropical-very humid) and many of many of my fabrics developed a really mouldy smell. If you are in a dry climate much of the year, I just keep mine in sip-lock bags with the pattern, and then on a shelf (I only have a few). Keep in mind, light will also fade your fabrics over time (especially where the fold is exposed), so be careful to keep your stash well-away from windows-best in a closet. I learned this the hard way and now have many fabrics with faded stripes!! If you are in a humid area, good air circulation for your stash is good-and you might even want to take the time a few times a year to turn your folded fabrics around (or even unfold and re-fold if your game!) to prevent any light-streaking. Lucky you! Good luck with your new house! By the way, there is a thread here showing many pictures of peoples quilting rooms/spaces for ideas-some are to die for!

Oh, by the way I forgot to mention above, what is nice about using a hanger is u can hang the mtl. and not even fold it hard. Hang it so it is long or short and I never get folds because it is loose, I let it just hang kind of like a small tube too (meaning-bring the bottom up to the clips and leave it loose, I use gauze under the clips so not to leave indent). Then by storing in the a closet, no light either. At this time I do not cover with bags, no need to. I have raised my rod way up so the mtl. can just hang too and do not stuff them in the closet. Can do this because not a lot of "to do things". I go back and check often and nice to c the mtl. and pattern right there copied. Also, u can just use a small end of the closet and still use shelves or plastic bins for other things in the closet.
