    Default Basting woes...any ideas?

Hmmmmm, I spray basted (505) 2 quilts about a month or so ago....put some pins in as well just for good measure and then they waited on my table until now to be quilted. I have just finished quilting them both and man, what a struggle it has been. One quilt was simple walking foot grid quilting, the other, fm meander and with both quilts the tops seemed to not be adhered anymore. I had a lot of shifting and bunching happening with both tops whilst trying to quilt them both. The bottoms of the quilts stayed nicely in place. It drove me nuts...one quilt I unpicked after a quarter finished and re basted with a gazillion pins before re-quilting. The second quilt...in exasperation I gave up, did the best I could with smoothing it out as I quilted and then gave the wretched thing away as soon as it was bound...I'm pretending that one never existed!
Anyone else ever had trouble like this with spray baste? I'm going to try Elmers next time and throw the basting spray away.

Never had trouble with spray basting except when I tried to use a poly/cotton blend. Every other time it worked great.

Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Aahhhh.......could it be that my batting is a wool/poly? Perhaps the poly isn't suitable for the spray baste?

I've only used it on cotton batting and have had zero problems (except the fumes and cost) lol. I'm back to elmers.

I had one spray basted quilt do that to me. I used 505 on it and it had a cotton batting. It hasn’t happened since and the only reasons I could think of were maybe a. I didn’t shake the can well before spraying, or b. I began quilting it immediately after spraying and the spray wasn’t sufficiently dry...

I’ve used 505 on dream green batting (made from recycled water bottles) and it worked just fine. Not sure if the dream green would behave the same as polyester battings...

I'm wondering if the length of time between basting and sewing has something to do with it? I've never had a problem spray-basting polyester batting, so I'm inclined to think that's not the issue. I usually fmq within a couple of days after spraying.

I have noticed that the spray “dissipates” over time.

Here's a current thread that you may want to read.
The topic is not directly about your concerns.
However, there has been some discussion regarding batting types and spray basting.

What am I doing wrong? Need help with a class
