Default Bobbin Backlash on HQ Sweet Sixteen...Help!

    Hi,
I am a relatively new SS16 owner and haven't had a ton of time on my machine. Today, I wound a bobbin with Superior Bottomline 60# thread and put Isacord 40# embroidery polyester on top. Both new to me in this configuration on the SS16 and this was in preparation to quilt my first quilt on it. Well I didn't get very far, as the first warm up exercise lasted about 3 inches of loop filler and my machine rattled and the bobbin thread was stuck. When I removed the bobbin case I discovered that thread from the bobbin had looped itself around the case spindle and also got caught up and was laying in the bottom of the case under the bobbin and was stuck under the flat spring. I straightened it out, reinserted the bobbin and started again. Eventually the same thing happened. The bobbin was full and the thread being so fine seemed to fall off the edges of the bobbin. I tried increasing the bobbin tension a little, a new needle, which is a 90/14. Nothing had a lasting effect. I figured the bobbin might have too much thread, with it being so fine, so I wound some of the thread from the bobbin to a new bobbin, stopped before the bobbin was half full. Tried again with the part bobbin and it went for a little bit before making some noise. Checked the bobbin and it was all loopy. Put on a second bobbin, same thing. I tried a bobbin I had taken out before beginning, wound with So Fine 50# and it worked fine. My guess there is an adjustment I need to make somewhere to remedy this, but never having had to deal with backlash before, not sure what else to try, short of sourcing some genie bobbin washers, again, which I've only heard off. Can anyone help me sort this out or point me in the right direction. Here is a picture of the bobbin so it's clear what my problem is. BTW, the stitching is fine until I think the rats nest gets so big then the machine starts rattling and this back side starts showing some tension issues. Thanks in advance...
    Kathy

I think it is a problem with the bobbin winder. It doesn't look like it has enough tension on it, also it looks like it is not winding evenly. I have had this problem also.

It didn't look like this when I put it in the bobbin case. It was tightly wound and even to start with. This is the "after" picture.

HandiQuilter is very good to answer questions over the phone - 1-877-MY-QUILT (697-8458) or 801-292-7988 - if all else fails - give them a call and see if they are able to help you out. Good Luck!!!!

Thank you! I found a quilter with a similar problem on their forum late last night and looks like it may be an adjustment on the spring within the bobbin case, but I have to call tech support today for help with that.

In looking for solutions last night, I discovered they make the washers for the M class bobbins too now. I'd heard of them but not having had this issue before never tried them. One thing that did come up in some forum conversations about them is that to use them, one has to remove the backlash spring inside the bobbin case first. Whereas on Sharon Schamber's you tube video she says it's not necessary. Would you know anything about that? I'm a bit leery about removing parts on my bobbin case.

Again, i would ask Handi Quilter that question when you talk to them.

There is also a great Yahoo group devoted to the Sweet 16 (and Tiara). They have tons of help there and tutorials and good stuff.
