I just came from an all day class on Hawaiian applique, taught by Nancy Lee Chong from the Pacific Rim Quilt Company. The class was on traditional Hawaiian applique. Oh my goodness, I think I am hooked. She took us through some history then showed us how to put together and applique a block. Her explanations and hands on sewing made it stress free. Check out their website if you are interested. I am doing the pineapple block now, but have plans for others too.

I have heard her speak - isn't she fun? So energetic. It made me a little tired just listening to her. I love her patterns.

I found that Nancy Chong's 2-fabric applique patterns were the perfect way to learn to do needle turn applique. They are fairly small, and you aren't dealing with lots of tiny applique pieces that have to be layered - just one piece of fabric on top of another. They're perfect for a portable hand project.

I also did a bunch of her Hawaiian applique blocks and put them in a quilt - http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-72844-1.htm
