I took a Betty Cotton seminar years ago and she never uses a straight stitch to sew in the ditch. She uses an elongate "S" shape and it's so forgiving and only the most persnickity would notice. Works like a charm. Good luck!

SID suggestion
No matter if it's straight stitching or serpentine, I find that good lighting on the machine is essential. An extra "goose-necked" lamp or one of those intense small lamps are great helps. Try it!
