She is a real beauty. I lined my case with fabric (glued it in), then took water based poly and coated the entire insides with several coats. Most of the smell has been sealed up so there is very little smell now.

Part of the smell is mildew and mold I think. Dave McCallum, a FW guru of maintenance and repair has a track on his DVD about how to get rid of the smell, ditto Carmon at www.april1930's.com also knows all the tricks and things to do. I took an all day class from him in February.

regular charcoal briquets in a cloth bag, with some old newspapers crushed into the bottom of the carrying case first, then lay charcola on top, close lid, takes a day maybe more

how about Auntie Dee for a name? Is there a place on these machines to check their date? I have my mom's old singer... black and gold in the cabinet with a knee press. No idea on it's age or who to get to service it! I was born in '55..... could be it was her mom's first!

I read on hints from Heloise to wad up newspapers and leave them in the area that smells (fw case) and that should absorb the odor. It would be worth a try.

Here is the link to check for date born of your FW. You'll find the serial # on the bottom of your machine (starts with 2 letters). Go to the website, lookup the # and you'll find the date born. http://www.singerco.com/support/serial_2letter.html

    Happy Sewing
