I'm retired now, but my company had no issue with using the internet during down time, but had specific rules about what sites you could visit. No problem with needlecraft sites at all. No Youtube, porn or video sites (like Netflix or Hula). Unless your productivity was in question it was a non-issue.

Where my husband worked they were not allowed to use the internet period. If you were caught and it was an unauthorized spot you were terminated. That was because they had so many part time staff that were forever going on-line to various sites and not helping customers that came in, because they (the employees were in the middle of something. Some sites were of sexual content which was an even bigger no-no, so they used a broad brush and let a lot of people that didn't take them seriously go. Some of them would use their cel phones and my husband tried to tell them it was okay during their break but if they were sitting at the front desk, or performing required duties it was best they not even answer their phone because the general public loves to tattle on city employees.

Where I worked they removed games from all the machines because too many people didn't know when to stop. We did a lot of research on the internet, so we had to use it. But there was a Big-Brother watching where we went and how long we were on the site. Once I was looking up a medication I didn't identify and it turned out to be a generic for Viagra and instantly had some porn sites pop up, so I reported the incident to my manager and she started to laugh and said not to worry about it, and she did get a call about it. She was able to tell them why I was looking up the medication. But laughed about it anyway. She was also rather amazed they cared since we were always looking up medications.

I'm in the IT field so I'm always at a pc at work and I'm on the board more at work than at home. At home I rarely get on the pc unless it's to pay a bill or download/look for an embroidery pattern. I have lots of free time at work; something I have very little of at home.

It's funny what people will try to get away with at work. A place where my DH used to work, roughly 20 years ago, they implemented a program to keep track of what people were working on. A woman who looked very industrious was recompiling the same program over and over with no changes just so she would look busy!

Another programmer wanted to teach people who did not log off their computers when leaving for lunch. He made up a program to look like a log on screen and he would run it on their computers. They would think they were logging on and the computer would sass back at them! Even to chewing them out for not remembering their passwords! They soon learned to log off!

I do at the hospital when I'm in the call room or in triage between pt's. Never in the clinic because I'm to busy.
