First of all, I have to compliment you on your color (and tone) choices for these blocks. They are really soft and beautiful!

With that said, I like picture #1 best--it really says x's and o's to me.

Have you considered doing a thin sashing between to break up some of similar tones you are concerned about?

Thank you for the help ladies!

I was totally planning on the 1st one until I started laying things out and trying other things and then I didn't know what to do. I'll stick with the origonal plan. I can start working on the official final layout now.
