they do disappear. but sometimes when marked on dark fabric, ironing it will leave a white line behind. best to test your fabric.

This sounds more like what happens with frixion pens. Depending on the brand of air erase pens you have ironing can indeed set the color. From Dritz FAQ page: Ironing over marks may cause the ink to penetrate deeper into the fibers so that the ink is more difficult to remove. that white shadow left by frixion pen will wash out when the quilt is washed.

I agree with FelineFanatic ...
* the ghost marks that QuiltnNan mentioned is likely from Frixion markers. I have never seen that happen with actual quilt markers.
* also, for the "official" markers, may become permanent if heated with an iron.
* Likewise, water on top of some of the air erasables may set them into the fabric.

As always, it is best to test test test ... and test some more ... while replicating all aspects of the process.

The blue water soluble pens will definately be set permanent if you iron over them, and won't wash out

What about the pens highlighted in the recent catalog from Nancy's Notions? She calls them Extra Fine Point Erasable Gel Pens.

Anyone have experience with these???

That description sounds like the Frixion pens .....

If you iron over a marked line, use Sew Clean, it works. Amazon has it and some quilt shops do also. You could ask your quilt shop if they could order it.

There are sooo many different marking pens out there that it is hard to remember which one disappears with what technique: air, water, heat, etc. I put a mark on the shaft of the pen "X iron" or "water off" or "iron off", etc. Use a Sharpie marker on the pen shaft or write on those old typewriter correction tapes and tape to the pen. I wonder WHY don't these pen mfr's put the instructions like these right onto the pen. For what they charge it seems they could easily afford to do this and keep their sizable profit margins! Hope this helps.
