I like to use those friction pens. You mark with them; and, when done, you just iron the marks out.

I understand that, if you iron again (IF the marks come back), they'll go away again; and, once the quilt is washed, you don't have to worry about any of that.

I tried a couple of different pens, but never used them on actual quilts, because I am concerned about what the chemicals might do over many years time. I thought about Pounce, but have heard that it aggravates Asthma. I stick with ordinary school chalk. I have not had any problem getting it off the fabric. I wipe it with my hand or a computer brush. Very happy with the results and 12 sticks in a pack for less than $2.00 is lovely for my purse.

I use Frixion pens, although many say we should not use them. I test them on the fabric before using and have never had a problem. My quilts are not shipped by air so I don't worry about the cold bringing the marking back. I also use a white marking pencil, the pounce chalk, and soap. I save my small pieces of soap and sharpen them. My favorite is the black Frixion pen.

I would be careful with the chalk rollers. I used a blue one once and had a heck of a time getting it out.

Just saw a commercial today, Crayola markers, that suppose to really wash out. I have tried my grandsons washable crayons also, blue pens, and mechanical lead. It depends on what I"m working on. The only quilts I do mark are my HQ quilts. There is always a solution to get the marks off. I tend to use what's on hand. It's a living in the country thing, we couldn't run to the store for every little thing. Just remember, long time ago, when only HQ was the way to quilt, pencils was the only thing they used. Today on all the Heirlooms you see, I never see marks. So to answer your question, well, I think there is no one solution. Whatever works for you will work. good luck and have fun.

Chalk is great but make sure it's cheap plain old chalk. The low dust chalk has wax in it and is very difficult to remove.<object type="cosymantecnisbfw" cotype="cs" id="SILOBFWOBJECTID" style="width: 0px; height: 0px; display: block;"></object>

Crayola now makes pencils for use on fabric. They so far wash out nicely . Regular #2 pencil works too.

I use these chalk pencils and a light brush of my hand and the marking is gone. I don't know if this particular brand is available outside of Australia.
