Hi all,

I have a b&w jelly roll and my 23 year old son saw it and immediatly claimed it wanting a quilt from it. I'm woneering what I can do to make it masculine. Theres a lot of flowers and swirlies. He doesnt care overmuch about that right now, but I also dont want to make it for him and have him claim it looks too feminine.

well, if he saw it and claimed it, it's probably not too feminine. you could add a mottled black to be the highlighted fabric and decrease the emphasis on the flowery patterns.

You could add some of his favorite color as an accent to make it more personal for him. Or, agreed with kttb, try to downplay the feminine fabrics. Maybe up play colors/shades in what you feel are the more masculine fabrics.

I would use a red with a rich Asian design. Men tend to love that. I know how you feel mine are always claiming too. I made a fall quilt for me, my son claimed that one too.

here's my nephew's black & white- he loved this quilt (he's 30) got it for Christmas a couple years ago because he stopped by & saw it in the works and loved it- bright green, turquoise, orange, & yellow also work really well with black & white- I've also done French braids with black & white- with a bright color for the accent squares- nice- masculine quilts.

If some of your B&W fabrics are floral, I would buy some additional B&W stripes for sashing.

A log cabin is perfect for black and white fabrics, red chimneys, lighter b& w on one side darker blacks on the other. When all are blended in, no one fabric stands out...perfect.

Keep in mind that those florals may not show as such once cut up and sewn back together again!

Also, the pattern itself can help put a "manly" look to a quilt ... vs. "lady-like".

As already said ... he's claimed it, so take it from there and add in some other personal things, such as his favourite colour or maybe quilt designs/patterns he has remarked positively about, in the past.
