I like a quilt store that smells good not musty (I have asthma so if I can't breath I can't shop), not cluttered (I want to be able to turn without knocking down a bunch of stuff), samples of projects (they entice me to buy), & friendly, knowledgable staff. I know this doesn't tell you what to stock but if the atmosphere is right I will stay longer and spend more.

The reason I don't frequent my LQS is because they make me feel like an "outsider". So.....regardless of your fabrics, classes, patterns, displays, etc., please make your customers feel welcomed in your shop. Good luck!!

Don't like: rudeness, not much choice
If I were going to open a shop, I would do a survey of the area (wants, etc.) like you are doing online and investigate the program offered by the owner of Stitchin' Heaven about learning how to run a quilt shop.

So many good suggestions! One I really like is having a drop off (safe place) for long arm delivery and pick up. A lqs near me had this and it was so convient. And I almost always bought something when I dropped off or picked up a quilt. I would like demos of tools and lots of samples. I don't know if it is legal but even samples of free patterns.
A lqs did samples of traditional patterns (not Copyrighted) in current fabrics. Beautiful!

I don't know if your friend plans to be a SM dealer or not, but if she is and also offers classes I hope she will welcome patrons that have other brand name SMs without being judgmental and looking down on those people. That's what I deal with in the LQS here. :cry:

Anywhere near Austin? just curious where in TX you are. We just had a QB member from CA come to Austin and she was able to round up three of us in the area for lunch and an afternoon of shop hopping. I did a search by location "Texas" but it is hard to round up QB members in a centralized area to come to an event when you only say "Texas" in your location. In a state this big as much as we would love to meet everyone, it would be a little difficult for those from say the Panhandle or the valley to come and join us.
