Although I would have used it as backing, it is great that you have finally found a use for this fabric. It doesn't do anyone any good for it to be sitting on a shelf. Your snowman rag quilt sounds fun.

I agree with the people who suggest ripping the fabric. There was a time when most cotton you bought at the dry goods store was ripped. Then it will be straight and easier to handle. Great you found a use for it after all these years!

I like finding the 108" fabrics suitable for lap throws or you can get several cuts for baby/crib backings.

I agree cut it into 4 sections and they will be manageable.

I would rip off the selvidges and then press the edges no steam, measure and divide by multiples of nine and the rip them lengthwise to get more manageable pieces, then cut the 9" squares.
