I'm sorry. Can't really help you with this. Although I have a variety of things going at once ... one being hand quilted; one waiting to be marked for hand quilting; one on a quilting frame to be machine quilted; blocks being embroidered and stored in boxes for future quilts, I never have more than 1 quilt being cut & pieced at any time. It's easy to keep everything I need for that quilt together in something big enough to where the pieces all lay flat.

I collect the old Redmon baskets that were made in Indiana and store my projects in them. They are cute and holds alot in them.

Also I like the clear plastic boxes with handles that stacks from Joan fabric stores. I buy them when they are on sale.

Let's see, there's a quilt that I'm working on for my niece. I really need to finish this one.

I also making a couple of totes for my friends and family.
I made the mistake of making one for my niece then my sisters saw it, then they asked for them. Then on and on, it hasn't stop yet. I think I just have to tell them no! LOL. My friends are also asking for them.

I have different sized plastic drawer modules for different sizes of fabric--then sorted by color. I use the plastic shoeboxes for fat quarter sized fabrics. I use smaller three-drawer units for tiny pieces (good for paper piecing). Then I use the larger three-drawer units for yardage. Works for me, and I like that I can see through the boxes so that I know what's in a drawer without opening.

Also, I keep separate bins for works in progress or projects I'm going to start soon.

I would try and find a little storage cabinet for the downstairs so you weren't having to tote them up and down all the time. Clean up would be so much easier that way too. If you are going to use those large plastic bags, a floor of the coat closet would work. Or hang them up if they aren't too heavy.

That's what I do too; they are perfect for clothes patterns & pieces. I shop the thrift stores for wicker baskets (can't stand to pay full price of even 50% prices retail new when I know they go for a song to begin with). I've found two that work perfectly with the bags. That way i can see what I have planned coming up, its easy to move around and it looks nice too :-)

A friend gave me several baskets in different sizes. I have found this works great to store a project, fabric, pattern and notions. Also helps for putting together future projects. They also look pretty!

I put projects in progess in zip-lock bags. I put tops that need to be quilted on a hanger and place the binding in a zip-lock and attach it to the hanger and hang it in a closet.
