I've been interested in this type of marker that uses powdered chalk in a device that you rub over a stencil on your quilt to mark a pattern for quilting. I saw a new one in the latest Connecting Threads catalog that looks good. Has any one used this type and do they work well?

I had one of those pounce things that I bought in the mid 90's. I seem to be too messy and I didn't get a sharp line like I do with the clover slim liners. Someone may have improved it since then.

I saw the CT catalog and I don't recall anything new. It appeared to me to be the same Ultimate Pounce powder that has been around for a while. It doesn't rub out like chalk, you have to apply heat or launder to remove the marks. They make their own stencils as well that are different from tradtional stencils in that they use some sort of screen in the openings instead of cutouts. The benefit being the pounce pad does not hang up on areas of the stencil.

I have only used the tradtional pounce chalk, not the ultimate but many have used the ultimate and been pleased with the results. Don't load too much chalk in the applicator and it isn't quite as messy. I like to dampen the surface with a spritz of water before applying to keep the dust down and to keep all my chalk from boucing off with the hopping foot. It can be messy but the convenience and ease of marking makes up for it.

I use it and am very happy with the results. I just bought a bunch of new stencils at the PIQF. I usually FMQ and don't mark, but I noticed I've been doing a lot of the same designs lately so wanted to step out of my box.

I bought a bunch of those stencils at the PIQF too! I haven't had a chance to try them out yet but they look so easy! Plus they can be rolled up for storage which is a bonus.

I bought it and could not get it too work for me. I need to dig it up and try it again or resell it.

I love the ultimate iron off, but I don't use an applicator, just one of those small paint sponges.

Good idea - I'll have to try that as I don't care for the applicator.

I use the pounce instead of pouncing I use a paint brush I brush over my stencil , try it and see if if works for you.

I use my pounce all the time, and absolutely love it. It is my favorite way of marking.

I make my own stencils by drawing designs on transparency film (If you are a little older you would know it as overhead film sheets), then sewing (without thread) the designs. I then rub the pouncer over the film and there is the mark. I have never had any trouble getting it off and usually it is wiped off too soon and I have to re-mark, but if I do get it in the wrong spot and I want it off now I use a slightly damp cloth and it wipes right away. I have only used the white chaulk, never the blue so I do not know how it would come out.

The trick to remember is: Although it is called a pounce, you wipe it across the stencil.

Friends have borrowed it to see if they like it, and some really like it, others don't. It would be great if some of the other quilters that you know have one and would loan it to you for a test run.
