Precuts with the pinked edges - how are they measured?

From widest point to widest point? From narrowest part to narrowest part?

(I am not waiting for someone to say " with a ruler")

I have read that you can use either peak to peak or valley to valley. Just be consistent as to which you use in your project.

I received/won a small charm pack. When I went to use it, with some additional 5" from my stash.... OMG they we not the same size. The pinked charm pack was almost (less a scant) 5" if it was measured at the widest point. So while sewing, I had to 'adjust' for the smaller squares.

It is aggravating that 'everyone' downsizes things. Coffee is no longer 3 lbs, ice cream is smaller then a half gallon and just the other day I noticed that my TP is smaller. Even our bolts are (some not all, yet) smaller/shorter, used to be 44", now about 42"

With the quilting we are taught to be accurate and precise .... sure makes it harder with everyone scrimping on measurement.

Oh I am so glad you posted this. I just started a DP9 and have charm packs from 3 different companies plus my own cutting. NONE of them are the same size! I decided to go ahead and sew them together and square up later. How frustrating! I have heard all or almost all pre cuts are the same way. Do they not have a real person that can read a ruler? I doubt I will be buying pre cuts again. I have better luck cutting my own from fat qtrs. and doing away with the little waste created.

I think most of these are machine cut...if you'd ever worked anywhere to see this you would know why they aren't consistent!!!!

I don't think there's any standard used for cutting them.

I thought maybe the companies had big die cutters or something that just "stamped out" a stack of pieces.

I don't buy them any more. I had to trim the precuts before I could use them, so if I'm not saving any time why spend the extra money?

I buy charm packs only for scraps, and only when they're heavily on sale. I always wash them, so they end up un-square anyhow, and the pinking issue only makes it worse.

I saw video on MSQC where I believe Natalie was working on a quilt with strips that were pinked and others that were not. When she sewed the strips together she had the pinked strips on top so she could see that she was getting the pinked edges sewn. She stated that the 1/4 seam allowance needed to be from the valley (inside pinking). I just prefer a straight edge strip. I get verbally challenged when things don't work out the way I want them to work.
