I third it! I tried salt and paper bag, fabric softener sheets, everything else... but it was the Magic Eraser that worked, with minimal effort on my part.

I would cover whatever I wanted to fuse with a man's handkerchief or a thin piece of muslin. This gunk stuff is the main reason I don't use starch.

I was desperate in my RV with a sticky iron, DH used a fine steel wool on a cool iron and it came clean
Then I bought a teflon shoe so never again !!!!

I've also used a used dryer sheet and rubbed iron when it is cool enough to touch.

it depends on what surface your iron has. Mine is an ancient one with a metal plate that I just use a abrasive merl scrubber on. You would not want to do that with a modern iron with a pedal surface. I think I would go with the Magic Eraser if it was a newer iron.

I had a co-worker working on a t-shirt quilt and the same thing happened while she was using my iron. I save old dryer sheets for multiple uses and this was one of the uses, I ironed firmly about 12 dryer sheets and then used a Mr Clean Magic eraser. All the crap came off Dryer sheets are amazing things check this out http://www.savingadvice.com/articles...er-sheets.html
Good luck with cleaning your iron up!
