Default Sashing size for 3" blocks

I have 72 little 3" blocks from a swap I did last year, and want to put sashing around them. Is there a formula for this? And what size border should I use? Thanks in advance. This Board is the Best!!

    Oh how fun is that!

There is no formula or rule to sashing it totally depends on the look or feel you are going for, I would probably go with a very thin 1 to 1.5 inch sash. Or if you want each block to really be showcased and stand on their own you could go extra large and go with a 3inch sash.

do opposite sides first then top and bottom. Sides will be 2 inches long by the width you want. I would audition 1.5 sashing to see if you like it. If you did that then the top and bottoms would 5 inches long. Then I would put them in rows of 8 and make 9 rows. Of course, the world is your oyster with these blocks. You can do just about anything! You could make 4 patch out of them, using them as a "film strip" border, and more and more and more....Check out the scrappy quilts here on the board for inspiration.

I think I might cut strips at 1" so they would be somewhat narrow. Then I might do a 3" outer border. But play around- that is what is fun. There really isn't a formula, just different preferences and many options.

Thank you.. When I said 3", that is the finished size. 3.5" unfinished. I will audition and then make a decision...I want to at least get the flimsy done by April when I go to a quilt retreat with the other ladies there. Life has gotten me down a couple of times in the past few months, darn it! This will lift my spirits when I think of these wonderful ladies!
