I have had 2 Brothers and gave one to my daughters but they still work great. Recently had my machine in for a cleaning.
The fellow there said that the new Singers are not worth bringing in to fix they are all made of cheap plastic.

I have a Singer Confidence Stylist and I love it so far! There was no way we could've afforded more than a couple hundred dollars on a machine, and I got this one for 50% off, so my $399 machine was $199 when I bought it. I know people think they are crap these days, but I think mine is holding up well so far, and I use it just about every day.

I ABSOLUTELY wouldn't buy a new Singer, especially a low end Singer. I would go to a dealer, and try out what they have. Sometimes, they'll have a trade in on higher end machine that are very reasonable.

That price point is still low-end for a sewing machine.
