    Default Tailor's Clapper

Has anyone used one and how do you like it? Does it really makes seams and especially bulky seams flatter? Any tips for using it?

I saw the video on Nancy's Notions - will be interested to hear if anyone's tried it yet.

I have one. I got it after watching Angela Wolf on Its Sew Simple. I haven't used it on quilting but it works on other fabrics so don't see why it wouldn't work on a stubborn area

I used it all the time in garment construction, and I use it occasionally on really nasty quilt seams. The trick is to use lots of steam, then hold the clapper on the area until it cools.

I use it a lot to have flat seams. It works. I have demoed it too many times at guild and everyone can see a big difference. The trick is to use it.

I, too, saw the use of a Tailor's Clapper on Nancy's Notions. I have used one for over 50 years in garment sewing; but it had never occurred to me to use it in quilting. I never sew wool without using it. From now on, I'll be using it with lots of steam, like PaperPrincess, when my seams need help to stay flat.

Yes, it helps. I iron and just lay it on the seam then sew another seam. Repeat.

YES YES YES this just how I use it and it is a throw back from clothing construction but is great with those nasty seams.

In my other sewing life, before I started quilting, I used it for getting seams to lay flat. I did not buy one, I showed the picture to my husband, and he went out to his shop and made one for me. I used a damp cloth diaper with it to produce the steam needed. It does work, but I have not used it in quilting.

I asked DH if he could make one like the one I have. He said yes but the quality wood used was costly, the shape of the handle, smoothing, and joining would take a lot of time why not just buy another one if it was available. I got the impression it was the same as when someone asks me to replace a zipper. LOL
