I decided on the black. Of course, one-third way through, I wished I had chosen black with a hint of teal or something in it. Overall, I like the way it turned out. I did make one mistake and didn't see it until it was completed. I butted a purple against purple. Oh well. It's not perfect, just like me.

I have ordered the Shannon Cuddle for the backing. All the quilts I have made for the grandkids have had either the Shannon or SoftnComfy.

Now to decide on the quilting. What color thread should I use?

I think a variegated thread, either in gray tones or purple tones, would look nice with this lovely quilt!!

Varigated purple, that will "soften" the black since you regretted doing a solid black

I would go with a medium gray, that will blend in the gray and purple blocks and soften the black.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of how variegated thread blends at some points and stands out at others against the same fabric. It makes the quilting lines look "broken" to me. Of course, a lot of the time it looks great, so if you like it go for it... Try puddling some of the thread on different blocks first to see how it looks.

PS: just had to add, I think your quilt looks great! Very modern, and I generally avoid black, but I think it works really well here.

The backing material works great! I'm basting now and will be ready to quilt (I decided on gray thread), so now I need more answers!

I want to quilt to have a good drape. Doesn't the style of quilting make a difference?

Honestly, all I know how to do are stitch in the ditch, crosshatch, and loopy FMQ. Which one do you think I should do?

Loopy FMQ to soften the angles in the quilt. Decrease the size of the loops in the black to soften that, too, if you still think it shouldn't have been a solid. I'd do the black with a vertical loop pattern - sort of like a vine with loops alternating on each side as you go up or down, the fill the color with larger random loops and as you work toward the next block.

I kind of like the dramatic effect of the solid black. And the greens and purples soften it without going girly for your tomboy DG. The closer the lines, the stiffer the quilts ends up. So for better drape, keep your "loopy lines" spread out--maybe 2" inches apart or so.

The backing is adorable. What's it called?

The backing is Shannon Minky Whimsy Circle Cuddle Jewel and I love it! I love all of the suggestions you guys have given me. I've basted the quilt and can't wait to get started!
