Depending on the size of the shirt you can get about 2/3yd out of a long-sleeved 2x or bigger shirt. I cut the seams out, cut off the cuffs, yoke, collar, button and button hole strips. If the cuffs are large enough to get a 2-2 1/2" piece of fabric from and are in good condition, I save it. Same with the yoke. When cutting them up I don't remove the pocket because I might decide to leave them on when I make the quilt. The process is time consuming but it's something that I've challenged myself to do. If I had to spend the amount of money that you're talking about I wouldn't do it at all.

I have a thrift shop near by and I am always shocked at their prices. Is cheaper to get new clothes at stores around the corner. I saw there an old electric singer, plastic, with no feet and no power cord for $150.00. Forget about fabric. They had one horrible fabric with bananas and banana trees for $11.00/yard. They don't seem affiliated with any charity and I always wonder where the $$ goes.

I don't know that prices here at St. Vincent are based on location. We're in a small town, very poor town - mostly retireees and I checked out the men's shirts. Prices were anywhere from $6.00 to $20.00. I figured I'd get more for my dollar at the LQS!!!!

I understand that the thrift stores are there to help others, but the shirts at the DI here are way too expensive to purchase and make quilts with. I would love to support them, but it is just not feasible to pay these prices when you could get them at WM or Kmart cheaper.

We have a Cluster 13 Shop, where everything is $2.00 or less. I get most of my stuff there. We also have another religion related thrift shop that has 3 colors on sale each week, one at 60% off, 40% off and 20% off. Tuesday is Senior day for an extra 25% off total purchase. They will also give you a "volume" discount and if I fill my cart with fabrics and linens they will give me a price like $5.99 rather than count each item seperately. I try to only buy the larger shirts etc. for getting the most fabric. Plus size womens are also good sources, especially skirts, as are cotton dusters and scrubs pants and shirts.
