Wipe off is fine, but these grocery totes need to be washed - make sure it will withstand the washer.

Would it be oilcloth ? I have made totes from this and it is great. Wipes clean in a jiffy.

You could use Scotchguard, or you can buy plastic laminate, either sew in or iron on that would make the bags water-resistant. There is also a fairly new product on the market where the fabric is already bonded to the fabric, especially good for raincoats, etc.

I bought some Plasti Dip (Performix brand) to put on the bottom of my knit socks, but haven't tried it yet so can't vouch for how well it works on cloth.

Speaking of bird seed bags..........with spring here and time to buy flats & flats of flowers, I cut a 50# Sunflower Seed across the bottom and up the side and make a perfect liner for the trunk of my car. When you get it home, you can carefully take it out, hose it off, let it dry and put it right back in the trunk. Much easier that vaccuming the trunk every time. Also, I can see using them to make grocery bags too. They are very durable.

There is a fairly new product out by Joan Hawley. I believe it's only available on line or at your LQS. Sounds like really neat stuff and is supposed to be better than the Heat N Bond brand.
