I used to use 2.5 but found it left space when I turned it to the back side to hand stitch. I use the double fold method. Now I use 2.25 and it fits perfectly for me. Of course if my quilt is extra thick than normal I might use the 2.5 to make sure it folds and hide the front stitches.

I too started with a 2 1/2 inch wide and found the 2 1/4 inch cut to be a much better fit for my bindings. So much can depend on the batting used... if its a high loft batting the 2 1/2 inch would be a better choice.

I may get yelled at for this, but every quilt I have ever made has a binding of just 1 1/2 inches.

I used to make a 2 1/4 double fold bias binding. Then...I 'adopted' my husband's drafting ruler that happens to be 2 1/8 inches wide by about 36 inches long...this makes it way too easy for me to cut my own bias strips by simply using the width of the ruler as a guideline. For the past 10 quilts (at least) and for the long foreseeable future my binding width will be 2 1/8.

Thanks...I knew there would be lots of ideas and nothing is right or wrong! I guess maybe I've become better at putting the bindings on and it might be easier to down size now.

Have only done 2-1/2" folded in half. Have thought about doing wider on some but never tried it yet.

I'm a 2 1/2 inch girl. Double fold and yes, there is a bigger back on my bindings. If I'm doing a smaller wall hanger, I sometimes go to 2 or less. I just like the fact that if I make too much I have a 2 1/2 inch strip to use somewhere else and usually I make way too much binding.

2-1/2". It is the way I was taught and I am at the age where. you know, you can't teach an old dog!!!!!!! Mom told me the inches for everything to use - I wrote it all down, it is all memorized - too late for me. I have found the 2-1/2" looks neater, at least to me it does. Everyone has their own way, and each way is right.

To Teri from Minne-sew-ta, what do you do when you have had enough, boots, jackets, scarves, gloves, mittens, hats and you pack them all away and have a few sweat shirts and one light=weight jacket out and refuse to take out the "other stuff"??????? You freeze!!!!! That's our state, eh? Only a few more days left and we will be in the throes of Spring!!!!! High school tournaments are over, there is still snow on the ground and doggie doo-doo is popping up all over the place. So everything is uphill from now on!!!!!!!!

Enjoy the day, bind the way you like and all will be well with the world. Edie
