Is there anyoneelse out there besides me that uses a yard stick to mark and cut with? Or, am I the only one? I find they are less bulky that the plastic rulers. Plus they are long enough for me to mark and cut large pieces. I just wondered if I was the only one who still does this?

I haven't found a yard stick that was perfectly straight enough to use to cut a long strip. The carpenter's metal ones are accurate but they are too thin for the rotary cutter.

I would be afraid of the metal ones dulling a rotary cutter. I use a thinner acrylic one for most of my strips. Wooden yard sticks, I would think, would be too inaccurate.

i can't imagine using a rotary cutter on a wooden yardstick. you are right that they are less cumbersome to use. but you can order acrylic rulers almost any size you want. you'd have to google them.

I have never used one to cut fabric, but, I do have one screwed to the edge of my table, and then have my cutting mat butted up against it. I find it much more accurate to measure longer pieces of fabric that way.

I like the acrylic rulers because I like to be able to see the fabric through it.

I have a metal yardstick that I use a lot. It is flat, rather than the ones that curl, so it stays straight. Requires careful use with a rotary cutter, though, as slipping across the edge will ruin a blade.

Tartan

I use one alot when drawing a cutting line on large pieces of fabric. I put two quilter's omnigrid squares on the two corners and put the yard stick between them to measure across the fabric. I could rip a long edge I guess but I hate the way that sretches the fabric edge. I also use it the same way to square up a finished quilt before adding the binding. I draw a straight line on the edge of the quilt and then slip my cutting mate under the quilt and cut with my rotary ruler and cutter.

I have a metal yard stick that I use all the time when working with WOF and cutting long bias strips. I haven't had any problems with this method.
