Crayon Place Mats
I was experimenting with coloring with crayons. I was a bit disappointed that the bright color washed out. They turned out ok. I had posted these in a Main conversation so I thought I would repost here since they are sitting in a special place I have so I can post pictures easily.

I started using a lot of crayons in some of my quilts... I have found you have to use a lot of crayon to keep the great colours after they are washed... I also found that the washing really blends the colours

My Guild makes quilts using butterfly blocks made by children visiting the Monarch butterfly grove in Pismo Beach every winter. The butterfly outlines are pre-marked with several styles of butterflys, and the kids color them however they wish...even scribbles if that suits their talents.
The blocks are ironed under absorbent paper to soak up and eliminate the wax. Then they're squared up, sewn with alternate butterfly-print fabric squares, bordered and quilted. They're donated to Shriner's Children's Hospital.
The "secret" to making the colors remain bright, so I've been told, is to only use CRAYOLA crayons as the color is more intense in those and doesn't wash out readily like other brands. Also, if the kids don't use enough color on their artwork, we might go over the light sections with a little more color to make sure it stays after ironing and washing. You could also add more crayon if you see it is too light even after washing. Just iron and wash it again.

They are so pretty....using some pretty floral fabrics with them would be nice. I'm working on a label that someone made for me for a child's quilt...it has a little girl on it and she made several "practice" ones to practice coloring them. Haven't worked on them in awhile and am trying to get back to them and finish. The advice from Baloonatic will help....I'll try this! Your blocks are so soft and pretty....be sure to let us see what you do with them!
