When doing straight line quilting. Do you sew the the lines in the same direction or turn and go back the opposite direction. If sewing the same direction each time how do you manage the quilt under the machine.

I start in the middle and sew top to bottom, getting closer to the edge as I go. Then I flip the quilt and repeat.

That is the way I do it too. If a big quilt I scrunch and bunch it. The quilt has to not stall when sewing or the stitches will get too tight. I have to stop and rebuch the quilt to flow freely under the needle. I mark the quilting lines with a long straight edge ruler. I have a four foot one and a six foot one. Inexpensive at Lowe's or Home Depot. Mine is metal and two inches wide. I use Ultra Washable Crayola markers to mark the lines and use soap slivers to mark on the dark parts..

I sew every other row in the same direction then flip the quilt and sew the remaining rows from the opposite direction.

I sew in one direction for as long as I can cram the quilt through - start from the same edge of the quilt for each line.

Why? It minimizes the "herringbone effect" that I would get when I alternated directions.

Jingle

I use large safety pins and only straight stitch across diagonally, corner to corner. I go from corner to corner. To stop pleats from forming at intersections I push the fabric towards the foot.

I would have no patience to do straight line at about 1" apart.
