Memories of Woolworth's and Chicken in a Van

Growing up in Philadelphia, my girlfriends and I would pull our pennies, and I do mean pennies. After collecting soda bottles we found on the streets, we would get 2 cents a bottle, when we returned them to the neighborhood store. Then we would walk to Woolworth s at the shopping district. With 25 pennies we would share a plate of french fries with tons of ketchup. (The ketchup was free.) I know they just loved seeing us coming in. Yum!

I was teaching third grade in 1957 in a low income area where the children had few advantages. So I took the class on a field trip in a big school bus about thirty miles across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco zoo. Many of them had never even crossed the bridge before.
At the zoo we saw all the usual animals, had our bag lunches and played on the equipment at the front entrance then left for home. In the classroom discussion the next day when asked what they remembered most was the "fun bus ride" and "seeing hippopotamus going to the bathroom." Depends on your point of view I guess.

Oh yes ! I would always have the fresh strawberry pie that had large whole strawberries and a glaze over the top. It was always the perfect way to finish your shopping day. What great memories. Best part no one ever even knew what the word calories meant or if they did never brought it up!!! :thumbup:

I remember Woolworth's very well (North Syracuse, NY), the counter diner and all. Thanks for bring that up for fond memories.
I am still busting a gut with Chicken In A Van - my grandkids have some winners, and I don't even bother keeping a straight face. It's all too funny.
Guess what's for dinner in our house tonight? Yep - Chicken In A Van!
