He uses Flitz polish, and says he can really tell the difference after doing so, but he does not recall reading that others do the same thing.

Well, it's a very personal question... oh I see
You mean chrome and nickel bits or the Japan? I don't bother with the Japan, since the Singer oil does a great job at making it glisten. For the plated parts I use Silvo - not sure if this is world wide, but I used it when I lived in the UK and now in Australia: It's just a metal polish though, so I imagine any good metal polish will do. Makes a very big difference.

I have no problem putting to parts on a polishing wheel if I have to, often the parts are corroded and it's the only way to clean them up. I use Meguiar motorcycle metal polish...no rubbing necessary, just dissolves oxidation, no rubbing. I've used others as well.

I have used Brasso, Mothers, and some car wax with carnuba. All of it is non abrasive. Mostly I use it on the plated parts and on later machines that are painted not Japaned.
I don't have a polishing wheel so I have to do it by hand. I can't get it near as shiny as those with the polishing wheels can. But it does look nicer.
