Need to repair a chain lift mechanism in old treadle

Has anyone done this? I have an old treadle machine and the cabinet has been pretty abused. The chain lift mechanism has ripped out of the lid. I have the wood piece and the metal thing the chain attaches to. This can probably be glued back in very easily, but I worry that it would not be strong enough to lift the weight of the machine. Then the chain itself is loose inside the cabinet, and I don't really understand how to put it all back together.

Are there any tutorials on this? Any pictures or suggestions? Thank you so much for any help!

Here are some diagrams and description for a Davis chain lift cabinet:

Best bet is to post pictures of damage and make of sewing machine for something more specific.

Thanks Jon, the diagrams help a bit, but I may need something a bit more close-up... The cabinet is in daughter's garage, so will be able to look again on Monday.
