I used to FMQ with my 15-91, but I was curious to try it on my Bernina 831 (same as 830 but less stitches). I was amazed about how easy it was and how beautiful the stitches were. The hook of the Bernina and Pfaff is vertical; it is more "forgiving" when it comes to FMQ. But for anything larger than a baby size quilt, managing the bulk is the main issue, so I think you can't beat the slim design of the Singer 15.

I tried free motion darning (a holey pair of jeans) yesterday on my 201K. Result was a tangled mess of thread. Possibly had the tension a little out but it really didn't work at all.
Inspiration was that post by Tammi last week. Guess I'll just have to buy one of those machines after all

I use a Singer 15-91 for FMQ, it has a decent stitch and is so simple to use, I am able to go very slowly.

I bought a 15-91 because I want to do FMQ on a vintage machine. .... have it all cleaned up and ready to start.... I have to get it set up and in the house. I cleaned it up in the garage. Anyway, I'll try to report how it works for me once I get it moved in and start my project.

Its funny, the tan 201k I got is the best free motion machine i have, and I'm comparing it to a 15-88 and 15-90. Its solid.

My Singer 201 does an absolutely fabulous job at free-motion work as does my 15-91!

If your threads are jamming up in your 201, check your bobbins for burrs. Old stretched out metal bobbins that were burred and didn't work in the bobbin winder anymore were making the thing jam up like crazy. Once I put a new bobbin in there, problem fixed.

As for free-motion, when you put that stitch length indicator to the nutral line like the 201 manual says, lower the feed dogs and you don't even have to put any foot on at all, and just giver, the machine free motioned like a dream. This was the Tan 201k I just sold.

For the record, I use my 15-88 treadle for free motion work and general sewing, its slower than electric, but I find the speed perfect for detailed work that requires a lot of control.

It was me, not the 201: I just wasn't doing it right so ignore my comment about it. I'll try again some time and do it right.
