Sally,

The Singer dating charts show many machines manufactured 1942. Starting with AG328076 (Jan. 8, '42) through AG428235 (Dec. 19,'42). Hope this will help her find a machine (Singer) of her birth year.

I'm sure there are many quilters that are too young to know. This could be a great "Jeopardy the Quilting Version" question.

I am looking for a Singer 115 from the build order of Oct 20, 1916 (My Grandmother's BDay)
I wouldn't want one from 1966 unless it was a white 221 My GM used a 15 (as a tailoress) and was born 1904. I wouldn't kick a 1904 model 15 out of my place. Grandfather didn't sew but was born when my VS2 was - 1891!

I bought a FW off eBay just because it was from my birth year !!! Machine is in awesome condition but case is stinky & I have tried everything to get rid of the smell. So far, the case has not made it into my house & it's been a year and a half !! I have tried coffee, charcoal, wiping it down with an ammonia mix, fabric softener sheets & even leaving it outside (but protected from the elements) changing the drip pad & so far nothing works. Love the machine though.

Oh Callen, I feel your pain. I bought a FW from a friend a month ago, and since then I've been posting here about how I can't use the machine because of the disgusting ODOR. I was able to get the case to smell a bit better, but in my instance it's the MACHINE that reeks, and I can't for the life of me figure out what else to do with it. I've followed every single trick I can find online, but mostly people have problems with the case being smelly (like yours) but there's not much info out there about making the machine less smelly. It gives me a headache to even sit in front of my adorable little FW. Sorry to hijack this thread but I just wanted to vent.

The closest Singer gets to my BD is a 66 authorized April 2 but there's a 221 on April 22 which is my niece's BD (not year!!) AL prefix starting in Feb with a 16 with 665741 only 500 made and ending in Nov. with an 18 model, 8996890 only 500 of those, too. 230,700 machines authorized in 1954 so I think I can find one sometime.

Crud. There was simply nothing worth buying at the end of 1974.

Steve, I -almost- had your 115! It's January of 1917 though. Probably the very next batch.
