I don't recommend it until you've tried everything else. I used Q-tips for the whole process. Just a tiny amount of straight Dawn, then worked it in. Then swabbed with water to rinse it off. Then blow with an air compressor until it was completely dry and clean. Then re-oil.

We've recently been using Kano Aerokroil at the shop, and it works better than WD-40.

Give the machine a good cleaning then oil it. Don't be afraid to oil it on the inside. If there are any plastic pieces in your machine don't put oil on them. I oil only metal area that move. Using only a drop of oil on each area. Then I take the bobbin out and the thread out of the needle and run my machine as fast as it can go for just a couple of minutes. Also there is a lot of help on the web for vintage machines on U-tube that might help you!

Hair dryers can soften up old globs of lube and free things up too.
